Oversized Clocks
There are many people who say that bigger is not necessarily better. For certain things, like my waistline, I definitely agree. On the other hand, I happen to be both astigmatic and shortsighted, so a small clock just doesn’t cut the mustard for me. This is why I have oversized clocks in both my bedroom and my home office.
Just as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, a large clock is not always large and a small clock is not always small. For example, I used to have a 9-inch wall clock in my home office. Instead of hanging it up, I had it propped up against the wall on a shelf at eye level (when I’m seated). Since this was only 6-feet away, it certainly counted as an oversized clock for my situation. The large numbers made it easy for me to see the time whenever I looked up from my work.
That same 9-inch clock hanging at the far end of a long hallway would look positively undersized. Since I am shortsighted, I would not be able to see the time at all. For that hallway, an 18-inch or 24-inch clock might be needed.
Oversized clocks are useful not just for shortsighted people like myself, but also for decoration. Oversized sunburst clocks hung on one wall of your patio can add a strong dash of character and warmth to the place. After all, most people decorate their homes from the inside out, and the patio is usually one of the last places to be furnished. But putting up a relatively cheap sunburst clock is a quick and easy way to make it seem less lonely.
Another place some people like to put oversized clocks is up against the wall facing the main door of their homes. I’ve heard of a housewife or two who got tired of their husbands coming home late and using this method as a strong hint to mend their ways. It’s a funny tale, but not so funny if the husband decides to come in through the side door instead.
I like oversized brass clocks. To me, the burnished yellowish look of brass looks warmer to me than the cold steel of many modern metal clocks. I feel that a brass sunburst clock would really give a home a warm comfortable feeling, especially in the dining room or the living room. Unfortunately, most brass clocks I have seen in the past are usually expensive antique timepieces or cheap shoddy made-in-China discount clocks. It is a pity that no modern manufacturer makes good quality brass clocks.
Even though I am not a Texan, I feel that hanging up an oversized clock on the wall of your living room can really add character to it. It certainly makes an interesting conversation piece for guests who drop into your home, much better and safer than your 50-inch LCD TV. After all, your guest may well have something even larger, then where would you be?
